John Dive (born c.1674) married Dorothy Aston in 1704. The coat-of-arms is Dive of Millwich charged with Aston. DPG604 seems to date from the late 1730s and the sitter is probably therefore in his early sixties. Although this is a portrait of some quality its attribution remains problematic. Attributions have been suggested tentatively to Hans Hysing and to Jonathan Richardson ('at his most sensitive').
