Portrait of John Eisenhower in his United States Military Academy (West Point) cadet uniform. John was the Eisenhower's lone surviving son. While his father was in Europe during the war and his mother lived in Washington DC, John attended college at West Point. He graduated from the Academy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
John rose to the rank of colonel in the regular army and that of brigadier general in the army reserve. He served as a White House aide to his father, was appointed Ambassador to Belgium by President Nixon, and became a respected military historian.
