  • Notes: John Minto (1953-);Notes provided by John Mercer June-July 2021: Speeches and directions from the back of a truck. John Minto at left with microphone. Andrew Byers (I think) at right. John Minto addresses the assembled anti Tour protestors. There was a good contingent of people from Hamilton and the Waikato. I continued to document the day, place, people and events as they unfolded/passed in front of my lens. So most of the next 2.5 films – 74-ish frames – that is what can be seen. Plenty of ‘stand back and shoot everything' along with a few closer studies. On one level not much was going on – a lot of standing around, listening, gathering and re-gathering. There is a lot of detail (some boring/some not boring) that can be picked out and pored over – faces, signs, individuals, odd movements and some odd characters. And as I was able to see later from my images, particularly around Marlborough St/Walters Road/Onslow Road, Patu Squad had a strong Hamilton representation who included friends, neighbours and even our flatmate/boarder. Only after the day viewing proof sheets and test prints that realisation dawned that I had photographed people well known to me without recognising them in the turmoil and heat of the actions of the day.
