Story: 1994
My heart eloped as Mr Nelson Mandela took my hand and nodded his head as I sung the famous 1994 election song, Sekunjalo Ke Nako! The crowd erupted spontaneously in dance, singing along with joy in their hearts to a defining moment of sheer Madiba Magic! I knew then that the optimism for the future of a bright new South Africa was palpable in every corner of the stadium and that no force of nature could stop the immutable birth of a new democracy! This glorious moment marked a new beginning for millions of South Africans who had always been denied their quest for human dignity!
I sung my heart out, literally tasting the tears of joy on my tongue as Mr Mandela joined the crowds with the now famous "Madiba Jive". The people, for the first time since colonial rule in South Africa – black and white – celebrated together a moment of peace, unity and love! This momentous occasion was broadcast to billions across the globe. I have never witnessed so many cameramen and broadcasting teams from all over the world as the crowd that eternalised this glorious moment! I fondly remember how Mr Mandela used the influence of his position, at the risk of his own reputation, to inspire the creativity and genius inside us all – without partiality!
My moment with my legend, Nelson Mandela, made everything within me shine brighter than the brightest star!
