João José de Aguiar, who studied in Rome with Antonio Canova (1757-1822), portrayed the prince in a heroic composition inspired by the statues of Roman emperors. The ability to represent the human figure and the grandeur of the
display of symbols of royal power (the crown, the sceptre, the sword, the insignia of the Military Orders) are expressed in apparent simplicity, bringing this work to the highest level of neoclassical sculpture.
The pedestrian statue was placed in the Real Hospital da Marinha in Lisbon on September 15, 1814, glorifying the protection of the Prince Regent D. João (future King John VI) to the entreprise.
