Typical of early slave traders, Anderson gathered "excess" slaves from north-central Kentucky and moved them overland along the Natchez Trace or by water floating them along the Ohio River and onto the Mississippi River. The land trip took several weeks, with the men and older boys chained together with a coffle to prevent escape.
