Immendorff's self-proclaimed his painting as 'Neo-Expressionism'; yet at the same time, he was also a multi-talented master of sculpting, printmaking, and stage designing. Immendorff repeatedly used the monkey as a subject for his works. Since this subject was one of the artist's self-portrayal, it also became a symbol of his creativity. Amongst his sculpted works also stands a portrayal of Joseph Beuys , the most influential German artist of the last century and Immendorff's mentor. Immendorff relentlessly explored the conditions of his personal progressions with an objective yet self-examining attitude, and at the same time fully expressed his gratitude to his mentor through his work.
