It is one of the multitude of objects made in the image of General Joffre, which are in varying and unexpected forms, such as a version of a game of snakes and ladders, given that he enjoyed significant mainstream popularity after the victory of the Marne in 1914.
Under the stand of the bust of General Joffre, who wears a felt and leather kepi, the words "Chantecler died on the field of honor." It most likely refers to Captain Pierre Chantecler of the 146th infantry regiment, who died from his injuries on September 25, 1915, in Massiges (Marne). Could this be the work of Captain Chantecler himself? We will never know.
