Casa Navarro State Historic Site is a lasting memorial to its celebrated owner, José Antonio Navarro, and to the historic neighborhood of Laredito. This understated yet distinctive complex is located on the west side of San Antonio’s bustling downtown. Sitting in the midst of a deeply urban setting very different from its original residential neighborhood, historic Casa Navarro has quietly weathered over 150 years of change and city progress. The Texas Historical Commission preserves the site and shares the story of Navarro’s life and times. Over the course of Navarro’s lifetime, San Antonio was governed by five different governments—those of Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America, and the Confederate States of America. Navarro himself weathered many years of political change. All the while, he remained a tireless defender of Tejano rights and heritage in his work as a public servant.
