Raised in Cuba, but living most of his life in DC´s Adam´s Morgan neighborhood, José Gómez Sicre (1916-1991) was a highly influential curator and critic at what is today the Art Museum of the Americas. Reflecting the values of the United States during the Cold War, he promoted a vision of Latin American art which valued abstraction over politically-engaged work. Here, Gómez Sicre (on the left) sits next to the celebrated Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco in his art studio.
