In patterns with a lot of sections cut away by tsukibori or with a lot of long thin lines created by shimabori, there is concern that, if left as it is, the pattern will tear if the katagami is twisted during dyeing. Thus, the layered katagami is peeled apart into two pieces, and a thread is stuck between the two, with persimmon tannin. The katagami is pulled back into place with its lines reinforced. This process is called itoire.
