This suit of armor belongs to a large group of polished or blackened jousting armors commissioned by Electors Augustus and Christian I of Saxony from the armorers Wolf and Peter von Speyer the Younger as well as Wolf Peppighorn. Johann Friedrich von Ponikau, who held the position of Groom of the Chamber under Augustus the Strong, probably wore this armor in a tournament on the occasion of the marriage of Augustus’s son in 1719.
