Designed by architect Francisco Isidro Monteiro, the João Caetano Theater was built in wood covered with stucco, occupying an area of 870 m² with capacity for 800 spectators. Several plays by dramatist Arthur Azevedo (1855–1908) were staged in a comfortable space organized to accommodate the audience, with a gallery displaying artworks and boxes for artists. The interior decoration, in shades of green with gilded capitals, was striking from an architectural point of view, especially considering it was entirely built of wood and stucco
