Description: In parallel to his quite remarkable activity as a tapestry-maker at Aubusson, Jean Lurçat also experimented with other artistic activities, most notably ceramics, which he practised throughout the 1950s. Besides abstract motifs, which were characteristic of that period, Lurçat also brought to the making of pottery a figurative language based on plant motifs, as is the case with this hybrid jug, which is a mixture of a vase with a handle. The background in sea-green enamel, against which there stands out a decoration of hanging leaves painted black in a somewhat flame-like and rather precise stylisation, is perfectly suited to the irregularly finished organicistic forms.
