In the late 1950s, German couple Marketta and Hans Schilling bought some land in Cala Montjoi, in Roses, Catalonia. They set up a mini golf course, then a beach bar, and finally a restaurant. Thanks to Dr. Schilling's interest in gastronomy—having traveled all over Europe visiting the best restaurants—their simple fare evolved into ever more elaborate dishes. Following the trend for nouvelle cuisine in the 1970s, they added some French dishes to their menu.
