Born in 1833, Julius emigrated with his brothers Henry and Lee in 1852. He worked alongside Henry in their portrait studio on Pennsylvania Avenue. The two brothers lived in the Petersen House when President Abraham Lincoln died there, and posted for an engraving by Albert Berghaus. Julius died in 1910 and is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
