Sleeveless jumpsuit in synthetic fibre knit and lurex. Austrian by birth and American by adoption, Rudi Gernreich was revolutionary in the fashion world of the 50’s and 60’s. Ahead of his time in each and every one of his proposals, Gernreich was capable of taking advantage of the peculiarities of the American fashion system to create with a freedom he could not find in the European context. His contributions are innumerable, particularly his underwear (the No-bra of 1960, the first bra made entirely of polyamide without either underwire or padding) and his bathing-suits, among which the monokini stands out, as the naked body was integrated into the actual design itself for the first time ever. The jumpsuit in this display is a clear example of her belief in unisex garments.
