Dr. Justina Ford
Physician
1871 - 1952
INDUCTED 1985
Dr. Justina Ford was Denver’s first licensed African American female physician. Late in life she estimated that she had delivered some 7,000 babies during her fifty-year career.
After graduating from the Hering Medical College, Ford and her first husband moved to Denver in 1902. For many decades, Black patients were not accepted at Denver General Hospital. Consequently, for 50 years Ford practiced medicine and treated needy patients from her Five Points home. She specialized in gynecology, obstetrics and pediatrics.
“…When all the fears, hate, and even some death is over, we will really be brothers as God intended us to be in this land. This I believe. For this I have worked all my life.” — Dr. Justina Ford
