This page from the Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh by Rashid al-Din depicts a scene that is said to portray the flight of Muhammad ibn Suri, ruler of Ahangaran (now in modern Afghanistan), following his defeat at the hands of Mahmud ibn Sebuktegin, who was ruler of the Ghaznavid Dynasty of Eastern Afghanistan from 998-1030 C.E. The Jāmiʿ al-tawārīkh (“Compendium of Chronicles”) is one of the supreme masterpieces of Persian book painting and one of the most important medieval manuscripts from either West or East. It is a world history which encompasses a range of cultures, from China in the East, to Ireland in the West, from the time of Adam. It is written in the Naskh script and contains 70 illustrated folios.
