The
woman was portrayed during her stay in Rome. In
those years Jacop Ferdinand Voet painted thirty-seven portraits of
"ladies" and the fortune of the cycle engaged the painter and his
workshop in a series of replicas for the top Roman aristocracy. The duchess
is shown three-quarter length, with her torso turned slightly towards the
dark background. The
details of her dress are rendered with extreme virtuosity, using brilliant
chromatics.
