  • About the Work: Roberto Montenegro was a painter, illustrator, stage designer, and artistic adviser who assimilated various influences from movements such as Cubism, Surrealism and Art Nouveau. He was also an influential promoter of the popular arts. Montenegro’s work was often allegorical, but he also made use of portraits and the landscape to represent critical aspects of the society of his time. He was the first artist who introduced Art Deco to Mexico, and he did so by combining it with elements of popular and pre-Columbian art. Rocas / Rocks, c. 1960, is a traditional representation of a rocky mountain seen from below, where stylistic affinities with of artists such as Diego Rivera, Jorge Enciso and Gerardo Murillo “Dr. Atl” can be seen.
