Painting of Hogsback mountain in background, with column of troops marching and seated natives. This painting illustrates an event during the Amatolas Campaign of the Eighth Frontier War. The Hogsback is a pass in the Amatola Mountains, between Queenstown and Grahamstown, South Africa. On the reverse of the painting [and visible in the frame] is another rough oil showing natives in the foreground firing on a group on a distant hill top, with mountains in the background. The painting is partially obscured by paint, an indistinct pencil description has been written and signed T. Baines. Part of the pencil description reads 'British forces and native...'
