Kakapos are only found in New Zealand. This flightless, nocturnal parrot species with a highly complex mating ritual is threatened by extinction. Its numbers have been decimated since the introduction of non-native predators to New Zealand. Indeed, in 1987 the situation was so drastic that the final few remaining kakapos were moved to an island with no mammals. Thanks to concerted efforts to protect the species there are now more than 120 kakapos.
