Kākiwi, meaning bow or bend in Hawaiian, began as a collection of sticks and limbs gathered by Deborah Butterfield while visiting Hawaii. She assembled these into a statue and then had each piece of wood individually cast in bronze, making the final work both durable and one of a kind. By using objects found in nature, Butterfield’s contemporary artworks creatively capture the strong sense of place that has long inspired American artists.
