It is believed that Kamo dolls originated when an odd-job man of Kamigamo-jinja Shrine in Kyoto started making dolls using fabric tucked into a piece of wood. But its history is obscure, lacking reliable historical sources.
We have a collection of 243 Kamo dolls. Such a large number of collection is rarely ever seen even in Japan. The special characteristics of Kamo dolls are warm smile on their face and littleness. Among them, the especially smaller ones are called ‘Mame (pea-sized) Kamo’.
The dolls in the photo are the seven gods of good fortune. They are self-righting Mame-Kamo dolls with a tiny weight inside the bottom.
