Kamo dolls, seven gods of good fortune

It is considered that Kamo dolls originated when Takahashi Tadashige, an odd-job man of Kamigamo-jinja Shrine, Kyoto Prefecture, started making dolls using fabric tucked into a piece of wood. Its history is shadowy, lacking reliable historical materials.
The special characteristics of Kamo dolls are warm smile on their face and littleness. We have a collection of 243 Kamo dolls. Among them, the especially smaller ones are called ‘Mame (pea-sized) Kamo’.
The dolls in the photo are the seven gods of good fortune. They are self-righting Mame-Kamo dolls with a tiny weight inside the bottom.
