Around 1800, the publisher Iseri commissioned him to create a series depicting the eleven acts of the Chushingura. It was so successful that in 1806 he was commissioned to produce a second series. In this series, he created more detailed drawings, notable for the unusually tall figures and the depth of perspective in which the scenes unfold. The predominant colors are red, grayish blue, and green.
This print belongs to this series and depicts the third act of the play. The scene, set outside Kamakura Castle, recounts the attack by Bannai (Morono's retainer) on Kanpei, one of the play's main characters.
