It is a twenty-volume set of the Ming Dynasty text *Xi Han Tong Su Yan Yi*, translated into Japanese and illustrated by Hokusai in 1845. *Xi Han Tong Su Yan Yi* was a work about the Chu-Han War (206-202 BCE), a bloody civil war that occurred after the collapse of the Qin Dynasty.
In this translation of the Chinese text, Hokusai depicts the war in dynamic, bloody battle scenes interwoven with landscapes, dragons, giant snakes, beautiful women, and court rituals.
Some scholars believe that, since Hokusai was around eighty years old at the time of publication, some of the illustrations may have been painted by his daughter.
