Wheel-made, black gloss kantharos with
an everted lip, convex body and narrow
pedestal foot. Two horizontal handles
rise from the centre of the body and
curve inwards. The tondo is decorated
with a stamped composition consisting
of a rhombus with palmette motifs at the
corners, surrounded by a band of roulette
decoration. Kantharoi with this form
and glossy black glaze were produced
in Attica, the centre of black gloss ware
from the late 6th century BC until the 5th
century BC (see Bouzek 1990, p. 152, pl.
8, 8).
Later the quality of its production
gradually declined and commercial
production stopped in the 1st century BC
(see Hayes 1984, p. 31).
