Turn of the 20th century

Rugs from the Karabagh area of the southern Caucasus mountain region are characterized by primitive abstract geometric designs. Indicative of European influence, the floral motifs are somewhat crude compared to Persian versions. The weaver’s eclectic interpretation of a traditional European style results in a variation on a theme – beginning with an orderly arrangement of rosebuds, this carpet’s design transforms into a free-form drawing, which surrounds the offset medallion.
