Karabagh Rug

Turn of the 20th century

Hill-Stead Museum

Hill-Stead Museum
Farmington, United States

Rugs from the Karabagh area of the southern Caucasus mountain region are characterized by primitive abstract geometric designs. Indicative of European influence, the floral motifs are somewhat crude compared to Persian versions. Patterned after more costly Aubusson and Savonnerie designs, this Karabagh was clearly made for the western market. The blues, teals, and pinks are typical of floral Karabaghs, as are the cabbage rose drawings. Whereas most of the rugs from this area are long and narrow, this rug is diminutive.
