Karol Szymanowski met Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz in Zakopane, in the summer of 1904. This friendship quickly turned into a long-standing one. In March and April of 1905 they traveled together across Italy; they met many times in Zakopane. Composed in 1903-1904 Piano Sonata No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8 was dedicated by Szymanowski to "Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz." Witkacy dedicated the drama "New Liberation," finished in the spring of 1920, to the composer. In Witkacy's novels "Farewell to Autumn," "Insatiability" and "The Only Exit" music and the person of Szymanowski play an important role. Witkacy created four portraits of Szymanowski, which were given to him.
