The movement to achieve progress at the end of the 19th century was confirmed by the increasing demands for education and studies. But the public opinion was still under great influence of the prevailing tradition, especially for women. Bom in Jepara on April 21, 1979, Kartini struggled to achieve equality and to free the women from the bounds and prejudices of the prevailing customs and traditions. A collection of the letters that she had sent to her friends, in which she expressed her thoughts and assumptions had been published in a book that had been attractively entitled “Letters of a Javanese Princess” (originally entitled Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang / Door Duistermis Tot Licht/From Darkness Comes The Light)
