Kelechi Odu’s S/S19 titled ‘Automatic’ shown at Lagos Fashion Week 2018. This season draws inspiration from Frank Gehry’s architecture, the human effort is apparent in the object created, despite the overwhelming use of technology in the making of it. For the designer, growing up in Nigeria the word automatic was used colloquially to define remarkable human physical achievement. This collection is inspired by the idea that automatic is what we need now. Systems and objects that are created for human beings, reflect humanity and are made to facilitate living. Kelechi Odu is a trained architect, who started designing clothes after a realization that people underestimate fashion’s ability to reflect and even transcend cultural expectations, is keen on reimagining normative ideals about gender and culture through his designs.
