Nat Young was seen as one of the prime movers of the late 60s short board revolution that peaked at the 1970 World Surfing Championship held at Bells Beach and Johanna along the Victorian coast. Young and Victorian surfer Wayne Lynch were expected to dominate on home soil but failed to surf to their potential. By this point designers had perhaps taken the idea of the shortboard too far, as during this contest American surfer Rolf Aurness demonstrated superior performance on a longer more refined design.
