As a prolific painter, Kolade Adekunle Oshinowo loves exploring themes on rural and urban life, events/activities in his surroundings and everyday life in the larger society. The Market Place is a classic landscape by Kolade Oshinowo showing an open local market setting in a village saturated with colours. One sees the very busy nature of such markets with people moving randomly around, either hawking or looking for things to buy on a typical market day. The traders can be seen sitting on chairs, surrounded by large baskets containing their stock on the floor. Some of them have umbrellas to cover themselves from the scotching heat of the sun while others don’t. Some of the women can be noticed with their grown children who assist in selling their goods while a few have their babies either tied to their back with a wrapper or in their arms. The market seems to be at the heart of the small village as resident houses in brown can be seen surrounding it and spreading into the horizon of the painting. The horizon is also filled with lush trees in different shades of green as well. Oshinowo shows so much technicality and skill in the surrealistic portrayal of this local Nigerian landscape.
