About the Work: Uruguayan artist, Jose Gurvich, associated with the Taller Torres García, joined the workshop early in his career and was inspired by its artistic philosophy. As Gurvich’s career developed he became recognized for his own particular style that related to his own heritage and life experience, that of a Jewish Lithuanian immigrant whose cultural heritage was associated with the European Jewish traditions of Hebrew, Yiddish and folklore. In 1947, after the death of Torres-García, Gurvich traveled to Europe and to Israel where he lived for a short time on an Israeli Kibbutz or farm collective, first in 1955 and again in 1964. This experience further inspired Gurvich to create paintings that integrated the concepts of the constructivist language with his Jewish heritage. In these works, Gurvich depicts life on a Jewish Kibbutz and shows the religious festivals and communal activities within the rural landscape.
