Ride-on toys, or kiddie cars, first appeared on the paved sidewalks and streets of America in the early 20th century. The earliest ride-ons depict animals such as swans and horses. Ride-on toys made around the time of World War I often reflected America's intense patriotism. The ingenious design of this tricycle presents the head of the bald eagle, symbol of American strength and pride. The eagle's outstretched wings serve as handle bars, and the tail is secured by the seat in the form of a fedral sheild. Although manufactured in Brattleboro, VT by the S. A. Smith Mfg. Co., this kiddie car has the feel of a piece of proud folk art.
