Kim Il Sung’s limousine

War Memorial of Korea

War Memorial of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This 1948produced Soviet ZIS limousine was used by Kim Il Sung of North Korea since before the Korean War. It was seized by rangers of the Sixth Division of the Korean Army on October 22, 1950, along the banks of the Cheongcheongang River in Sinheungdong of Yeongbyeongun, Pyeonganbukdo.
The car was given as a gift by President Syngman Rhee to the widow of US Eighth Army Commander General Walton H. Walker, who was killed in action north of Seoul. General Walker’s widow took delivery of the car in San Francisco on July 10, 1951. On the journey to her hometown in Georgia, the car broke down, and she traded it for an Americanmade car at a nearby gas station. The car then went missing, but the United Nations Korean War Veterans’ Association finally tracked it to a car collector in New Jersey in 1981 after a 14year search. The car was purchased from the collector for a hefty price and was shipped back to Busan on October 22, 1982, 31 years after it had first crossed the Pacific. The car was originally black, but was painted red, then khaki green in the United States. It was restored to its original black color in 1996.
