These sculptures were temporarily installed in the Villa Terrace courtyard, and are from Richard Taylor’s Chess series. They are abstractions of chess pieces, and address themes of choice-making and human behavior dictated by a series of decisions that can seem mysterious, innumerable, and instant. Taylor reflects on this series in this way: “Some choices have obvious solutions while others are more nuanced. Kindness, Openness, Awareness, and Lightness deal with aspects of character: how we choose to present ourselves to the world, and how we choose to construct our spiritual makeup.”
