King David’s Sacrifice

Felice Gianica. 1812

Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Felice Giani was a productive painter who decorated rooms with colourful history scenes. This drawing was probably made on commission. Neoclassically oriented artists hardly ever chose scenes from the Old Testament as subjects. Here we see God – in the guise of an angel with an
olive branch – finally reconciling with King David during a sacrificial offering. No painting or fresco by Giani of this theme is known.
