King from a Tree of Jesse window

Glencairn Museum

Glencairn Museum
Bryn Athyn, United States

This panel depicting an unidentified king comes from a Tree of Jesse window. According to Christians, a verse in the Book of Isaiah (11:1) refers the ancestry of Jesus Christ: “There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.” In art, the Tree of Jesse depicts individuals listed in the lineage of Christ as listed in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The window was donated to the cathedral of Soissons by Philip Augustus (1165-1223), King of France.
