King Injong’s Placenta Outer Jar

This placenta jar belongs to King Injong, 12th King of Joseon (r. 1544-1545). The long, full body of the jar is evenly coated with clear pale-blue white porcelain glaze. Four handles to tie strings are attached on the shoulder of the jar and the top of the lid has four holes. The stone tablet bears the inscription that the placenta of Kong Injong who was born in 1515, the 10th year of King Jungjong’s reign, was entombed in 1521, the 16th year of King Jungjong’s reign, after he was proclaimed as the crown prince. King Injong’s placenta chamber is located in Mt. Taesilbong behind Eunhyesa Temple, Cheongtong-myeon, Yeongcheon-gun, North Gyeongsang Province.
