King Karl XIV Johan started his life as Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, son of a solicitor in Pau in southern France. Largely because of his unusual abilities Bernadotte rose in rank like few before (or after). This seal is evidence of his ultimate achievement, both in heraldic and personal sense. The design shows the achievement of the double monarchy Sweden-Norway on a base of all five royal Orders of the realm. The King’s motto is “The Love of the People, My Reward”.
