King Pedro (1837-1861), son of Queen Maria II, married to Princess Estefânia Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. From the time he was very young he showed an uncommon intelligence and desire for knowledge. He died at the age of 24, without children and succession the throne was assured by his brother Prince Luís.
This portrait is a replica of a painting by Winterhalter, 1854.
