The king penguin is in his first moult. Penguins can’t fly, but they are excellent swimmers. On land, the penguin is a slightly comical creature. It has a strange walk because it’s actually walking on its haunches. The hips are low and the knees are quite a bit higher. Furthermore, they put their weight on the whole foot, while other birds walk on their toes. Scientists have studied how it walks and apparently this way of walking doesn’t use much energy. So that waddle isn’t such a bad idea after all!
