Kitchen interior

Marten van Clevec. 1565

Skokloster Castle

Skokloster Castle
Skoklosters, Sweden

This painting shows an interior view of a larger kitchen with various figures occupied in different tasks. At the center of the composition are two men, the one on the right is about to cut up a rabbit, while the other holds a plate, possibly for assistance. In the left corner of the foreground is a woman stirring a pot, and to the left sits a woman nurcering a child. Behind them is a smaller brawl as one man grabs a woman who is doing the dishes, to the clear annoyment of her fellow dishwashing colleague. In the background, in the upper left corner sits a party of people eating by a table. This painting shows a similarity to the characters in Cake Scene by van Cleve at the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona.

He sat up his workshop in Antwerp around the mid 1550s, where he had several students, most likely including his sons Marten the Younger and Gillis II. During the 1560s and 70s the studio was very productive, although most of the works executed were copies of his own originals.
