At George Mason University in the United States, a team have isolated a new molecule from the saliva and blood of Komodo dragons. This new molecule, which the scientists have named DRGN-1, acts as a kind of immune system in the animals, naturally destroying bacteria. DRGN-1 has been shown to prevent infection in wounds in mice and could represent the next generation of antibiotics.
