War Memorial of Korea

War Memorial of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

At the Battle of Hoengseong in Gangwon-do in 1951, the donor was captured at a POW by the Chinese forces, but managed to escape at Chuncheon. While making his way back into friendly-controlled territory, he took this flag, which was hanging at a school. Carrying the flag, he successfully escaped into UN-controlled land. He kept the flag in his custody until donating it to the War Memorial of Korea.
*Characteristics: The words “August 1950, in remembrance of the late Mr. Kim Seong-cheon, the student soldier who couldn’t be kept down, of Dong-myeon township, Chungseong-gun. At Garisan Mountain, March 23, 1973” are written along the bottom edge in permanent marker.
The creases from when the flag was kept in storage are clearly visible.
*Condition: The base cloth of the flag has been discolored and is yellow, but the color of the central taegeuk (supreme ultimate) pattern and the eight trigrams is fine.
The edges and the creases of the flag are severely stained.
Donated by Lee Seong-ryong
