Wheel-made krater has an everted flat
rim, tall carinated body that tapers
towards the base and pedestal foot.
The two pierced vertical strap handles
with rectangular cross section join
the rim to the body. The upper part of
the body is divided horizontally into
two broad friezes. The upper frieze is
decorated with quatrefoil rosettes and
metopes containing swasticas arranged
alternately, and the lower frieze with
eight-lobe rosettes and checquered
metopes arranged alternately. The base is
encircled by an undulating line.
The krater is said to have been found
in the Hydai Necropolis in the Caria
region. Large kraters of this type form the
majority of vessels found at Hydai and
were evidently produced locally. They are
thought to have been used as burial urns
(see Türkteki-Hürmüzlü 2007, pp. 96-97,
no. 38).
